WHAT IS A

Neck Lift?

When you think of getting older, your mind might immediately go to facial wrinkles and sagging. However, the neck is actually one of the first places to show our age. Loose, drooping skin, vertical banding, horizontal creases and hanging fat can develop. If extra skin is significant, a neck lift may be the approach. During a neck lift procedure, the skin is pulled up and back and excess skin and fat are removed. The incisions are hidden inconspicuously behind your ears. This results in a tauter, smoother neck and a more youthful appearance.

BEFORE + AFTER

Results

Dr. Jung will give you instructions to follow to ensure the operation is safe and successful. After the procedure, you may have some swelling and localized bruising, which should disappear within four to 10 days. Immediately following your neck lift, Dr. Jung will place a bandage under your chin and wrap an elastic garment around your neck and head. You can remove the bandage the next morning, however, you’ll want to continue to wear the elastic garment at night for two weeks.

TREATMENT

Considerations

Men or women whose face and neck have started to sag but who still have some skin elasticity and a strong and well-defined bone structure tend to be the candidates for a neck lift. While most patients range from ages 40 to 60, people in their 70s and 80s have experienced success with neck lifts. Dr. Jung will assess you at your consultation and determine if a neck lift will help you achieve your aesthetic goals. He’ll also decide on the approach that will work for your needs.

The incision in a traditional neck lift typically starts in the hairline by the sideburn and continues down and around the ear before ending in the posterior hairline. Fat from the jowls and neck may be sculpted or redistributed. The tissue underlying the neck skin is repositioned and the platysma muscle is tightened. Excess skin is trimmed off and what remains is redraped over the new, lifted contours. A separate incision may be made under the chin if liposuction or repair of the muscle in that area is necessary.

When the procedure is complete, Dr. Jung closes the incisions with sutures or skin adhesives. A limited incision neck lift is another option for some patients. This technique involves shorter incisions only around the ear, however, the results may be more limited.

PRE + POST

Op Care

Prior to surgery, Dr. If your sutures need removal, they’ll be taken out in about a week to 10 days. Over the next few months as you heal, your neck will regain its softness and suppleness and the results will be evident.
