Our Houston, Texas liposculpture patients almost always ask Dr. Jung what the difference between liposculpture and liposuction is at their initial consultation. There’s a lot of confusion surrounding the terms. The short explanation is that liposuction is part of the overall procedure of liposculpture. They may be essentially the same thing with varying levels of involvement, however, liposculpture is a more advanced and precise alternative to liposuction for men and women.
What is Liposuction?
While Dr. Jung has performed a multitude of liposculpture procedures, he rarely does traditional liposuction in Houston at his surgery center without further sculpting. Liposuction is the sheer act of removing fat from a patient’s body using a special tool known as a cannula, which is a thin, metal tube attached to suction that’s inserted into incisions to suck out excess fat deposits. Liposuction is an older technique. It’s solely fat removal without looking at things from a sculpting standpoint. While liposuction is an excellent way to remove significant, stubborn subcutaneous fat that’s resistant to diet and exercise from parts of the body like the thighs, “love handles,” chest, hips, buttocks and stomach, there’s no three-dimensional shaping.
What is Liposculpture?
Liposculpture, on the other hand, is very refined liposuction and it includes additional techniques and, sometimes, other procedures as well. It’s much like clay molding and the liposculpture procedure has become the norm as the field of cosmetic surgery has evolved into a blend of medicine and artistry. The human body has curves and we don’t want to take away from them and make patients look unnatural. Liposculpture relies on a greater attention to detail. We use finer cannulas and move the body into different positions for sculpting. Fat is removed selectively in a non-homogenous manner to achieve the desired silhouette.

Because liposculpture involves preserving body contours and can be used for more delicate spots, it’s ideal for the face, neckline, double chins, knees and lower legs as well as the traditional parts of the body with more substantial deposits of fat. Dr. Jung infuses the fatty areas with saline solution, local anesthesia and adrenaline before removing the fat cells. This approach reduces bruising, bleeding and discomfort for fewer risks and quicker recovery times. He can combine body liposculpture with procedures like tummy tucks or arm lifts, in what’s known as body contouring, to get rid of excess skin in addition to fat and create a tighter, more toned look. In other cases, our female patients sometimes opt to have the fat he removes recycled through fat transfer.
At Premiere Surgical Arts, Dr. Jung offers laser liposculpture (SmartLipo) and vaser liposculpture in Houston, both of which harness the power of technology for maximum precision and patient safety. These advanced forms of sculpting are less invasive than liposuction or even conventional liposculpture meaning there’s minimal downtime. They work well for patients within 25 pounds or so of their ideal weight and have the added benefit of addressing the appearance of the skin.
Laser liposculpture, also known as SmartLipo, involves inserting a laser fiber through the cannula. Once inside the body, we deliver bursts of laser energy in three different wavelengths to destroy fat cells so they can be removed, coagulate blood vessels and stimulate collagen production for improved skin elasticity and tone. Smart liposuction results in smoother, firmer skin and the procedure involves less bruising and discomfort.
Vaser liposculpture relies on ultrasound technology to selectively target tissues to shake loose fat cells and emulsify them before suctioning them out. These ultrasonic waves also encourage the body to produce collagen to smooth skin and speed up healing. Using Vaser Hi Def, Dr. Jung has the ability to accentuate the appearance of muscles by performing techniques like abdominal etching to carve out a “six-pack.
